Abandoned child by the mother but father need custody

If I have had my son living with me since birth and the mother is a person fleeing from the police and decided to just leave, how do I go about getting his papers (ss#, birth certificate ect.) if I am not on the birth certificate and do not know where she is? I want full complete custody of him, and I do not have the money for an attorney.

That is going to be tough. Because you are not on the birth certificate you don't have any legal rights to the child, as he is not yours. You could prove he is your through a DNA test which should match ~50% of his DNA to yours.

I'm not even sure where to start something like that. If not a lawyer, maybe social services (but then they might try and take the child from you).

Good luck.

DNA doesn't work unless you file to Establish Paternity through the courts..Go to your local courthouse and as them for the paperwork to Establish Paternity. That will get you started. It will have a parenting plan and everything. You can file a temporary plan and that should keep you good until it is resolved. You might have to serve her through publication since you don't know where she is.
