Custody Laws MD And FL

I signed papers for child support in Florida. I owe arrearage and a lot of back support. We never did custody papers. My son is 8 now and he is visiting me for the summer in MD. He keeps on asking me if he can go to school here. His mother doesn't want to let him. I am a little more stable than she is at this point. Does a judge let an 8yr old boy have say in what he wants? Since we never went to custody court could I just keep him here in MD? If so would she have to file here or FL? From my understanding possession is 9/10 of the law. I know she is an alchoholic and other things. So did I at one point. I have a stable enviroment for our son, she keeps moving around and getting kicked out of places, but our son stayed in the same school in florida. I know I should see a lawyer, but I want to know if I stand a chance. Both her and I have skeletons in our closet that will come out, and she would have a great defense to her money problems. If I told the judge that I really didn't send money is because I felt it would go straight to her habits and I would like to put the money in an account for my son for when he is 24 to do with as he pleases, would he/she agree with those terms? I heard that since my son would be living with me for more than 6 weeks, he would be a legal resident here in MD, if this is true, couldn't I go and file for custody and support here? I may have more questions later, but this would be helpfull to me if you can. Thank You!
