Do I have to pay for a child who is emancipated (joined the military service)?

My boyfriend's exwife is saying that even though their son is in the military, he has to pay child support because child support is based on last year's W2-'s. He's essentially a year behind in payments even though he's never missed a child support paymeny ever. We have never heard of a noncustodial parent needing to pay past 21 or past emancipation because the child support amount is based on last year's income. She thinks that he's behind in payments and owes her money for another year until he is basing his payments on last year's income.
