Does the money that I pay to my childs mother count on when the child support order is put into effect?

My child support order has not started yet. But I have been giving money to the mother of my child sense he was born. My mother is telling me that sense I'm giving her the money and writing it down how much I have gave her and when I gave it to her that child support will take off that amount from what I will own from his birth but my mother in law is telling me that it is a gift of money because I'm not sending it to child support first. Can you tell me who am I to believe. My mother had got child support for me and my mother in law got child support for her son. But the both believe it goes two ways. I don't have a long work history behind me because I tend not to hold a full time job but when I do work my mother takes the money I make to give to my sons mother and tell me that this is money I won't have to worry about catching up on when the order takes place. Thank you for you time.
