Ex has Residential Custody, I was lied to by lawyer and now lawyer is dead.

My ex has residential custody of our son. When getting the divorce my lawyer told me it would be a temporary situation because I did not want to pull my son out of school mid year. When school was finished I wanted my son to come and live with me and go to a school by my house and my ex told me that I did not have the right to take our son. I called the lawyer and he had passed away. Sooo I went to a new lawyer and he told me that the papers said that my ex had residental custody and I would have to fight him for it. Well it has been 4 years and I am still trying to get custody of my son. I have a lawyer now and he keeps telling me that I need just cause to go to the judge. So I have been taking my son to a child physiologist because my son does get verbal and mental abuse from my ex. I just dont know where to go from here. I am asking here because it is not going to cost me $300.00 to ask a question. Please can someone give me some advice??
