How can my husband adopt his step son?

I am getting married on 10/31/08 and my soon to be husband wants to adopt my son. I was a rape victume so there is no father on my sons Birth certificate. We do have a DNA test done to prove paternity and he is ordered to pay child support (he just never pays it). IS the adoption process too complicatedfor us to do on our own.
