How do you go about getting custody over a sibling and becoming their guardian?

My mom has sole custody of my sister, but my mom is becoming ill. Our father has been physically and emotionally absent from our lives for many years. If something were to happen to my mom, how would I go about getting custody of my sister and becoming her guardian? I'm only 19, but I don't want my sister to go to our father, plus I don't think she'd want to go to him anyways.

I'd appreciate any information.

This is for a court to decide , and your mother has to start the process, so call a good lawyer , and get it started, and you will be able to do this, good for you for helping your family
