How far back can you go to request child support and until what age if still in school?

The biological father knew at conception the baby may have been his, but instead of requesting paternity testing he went on with his life. I also went on with my life and married and my husband gave my son his name. It wasn't until my son was 9 that I made contact with the biological father. At the age of eleven I requested and paid for a paternity test which proved him as the biological father. I didn't pursue child support because I didn't want money to keep them apart, but now our son is 18 and his biological father doesn't pay anything out of pocket for him. Can he be sued for back and future child support until the child is out of college?
