How is child custody determined for minor to non-custodial parent?

What chance does my adult daughter (47), a single mother have in court....was served with papers ex-husband the non-custodial parent, in joint custody of their 14 yr. old son is seeking sole custody of him this year....he starts high school in fall.Divorced 7 yrs....ex lives in another community a great distance away...Son has had a life with grandparents who live houses away since birth..a close loving bond.. No siblings involved.. Parents have not had any communication verbally or otherwise concerning their son's welfare,leaving him constantly confused......i am his grandmother and this is a painful situation for all of us...here in Massachusetts.. Thank you for whatever help you can provide.

The boy has an established support system of friends and family where he is, there's no reason for that to change. Taking him out of his environment might be disruptive. I hope it works out for you.
