I have temporary custody of a friends child, can I get full custody..and how?

I have temporary custody of a friends 8 month old little boy. I want to get full custody of him. The mother gave him up because she wanted to move out of her mothers home and move in with her boyfriend who is a sexual offender on probabtion and can not be around children. The little boy was very sick when I got him...he had bronciolitis at 5 months old..I talked to the grandmother and she tells me he had been sick for months and his mother did nothing to help him. Within a week with my husband and I, his condition improved dramatically. Also the childs mother has another little boy whom she signed custody of over to her mother. This girl has been on 4 HRS cases...the last one was only closed because she no longer had custody of either children. On the last case they were investigating abuse and neglect. She's never had a stable life. Never lived in one home for more than 5 or six months at a time, same goes for the jobs. My husband and I are very stable and love this little boy and fear for his life if he goes back to the mother. What can we do to keep custody of this little boy. The temporary custody was voluntary and the paper was from DCF and notorized by the court house. The paper states the start of custody but there is no end to it. Can we keep custody of him and make her fight us to get custody back?

If you have been appointed custody of the child though the courts then the mother can't do anything like trying to take the baby. The court would have to be the one to take your custody away. You could file a motion with the court and ask for full custody. Where is the father that he is not in the picture right now. It is to bad that the parents would not just sign their rights and let you and your husband adopt the baby, maybe you would have that option with the court. I believe after the papents have not been able to get the child back within a year the state can put the child up for adoption.
