I'm a soldier and because of me deploying can there father get custody?

I am a single mother I have deployed twice, I have two boys ages 2 and 4 there currently with there father in Chicago while i''m here at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I went home during Christmas I wanted to bring my boys back but there father would not allow me to. We have never been to court there was never any paperwork done saying he has custody, How is it that I can''t bring my children here with me? It was always under that once I was settled I wold bring my boys back with me. What rights do I have as an unwed mother? They have been with there father for two years but I have western unions showing that I have been sending money for daycare and buying winter coats and clothes. If I was not sending money he would not be able to take care of them on his own. There father is 28 yrs old and lives with his mother and he has two other children, but due to me deploying that the only reason he has my boys. He steped up as a father insteas of me sending them to my sister how do i get my boys
