Joint custody

For what reasons can joint custody be awarded? I am a single mother and my ex-boyfriend is seeking joint custody. I am a good mother and have done nothing wrong but say no to him, for what reasons can joint custody be awarded?

Depends on the age of the child (if school is a factor) and if both of you can be considered fit parents to both raise the child.
