Joint custody

My son and his girlfriend had 2 children and were never married. I have the children 90% of the time. The mother has sole custody, but has agreed to give me joint custody. Can we do this, do we have to have my son's permission, and how do we go about it? Neither of us can afford an attorney. I live on an income of SSI, if I get joint custody, will I be able to get some sort of financial assistance, as it is now, I'm becoming very depressed and broke due to the situation. PLEASE HELP!

There is know way your going to be able to get joint custody of your grandchild. The courts do not allow that. Even if you were to get your son to consent it won't happen. Grandparents have know legal rights in regards to their grandchild or grandchildren.
