Joint legal custody

I have a 4 year old little boy who lives in Virginia with his mother. I pay child support, and see him often. My question is how do I go about getting joint legal custody? It's been my experience that the only time I have any ay so regarding him is when she wants more money. Now, I have a court date at the month, and I wanted to ask for joint legal custody, and have his last name changed to reflect that I'm his father. I would love to ask for joint physical custody, but I'm guessing it would be imposible because he lives in Virginia and I live in NC. Can you advise on the questions listed above.

Thanks,

Reginald

You would have to file for joint custody in the state where the origanl custody was ordered. However the promblem is just what you stated your leaving in different states and that makes it a little hard to make decitions together.
