Sadly, most the time noncustodial parents will try to go for joint lega/physical custody when they normally do not have the children simply to avoid paying child support. They figure if they have the children half the time then child support will be nonexistent or considerably less. Your children are of the age already now that they would have a say in where they would want to reside. If they want to remain with you, I find it highly unlikely that a Court would grant joint physical custody. Joint legal is not bad as this means that you both agree to make joint decisions for the children.
As far as tax exemptions, it is usually who has the children for more than half the year who can claim. The only way the father could claim is if you have an agreement (like you would alternate years or you would each claim one) and then you would give up your exemption for one or a year.
