Is there an age in TN when a child can choose who to live with?

I have been divorced from my ex since 1999. The divorce was final around our son's 1st bday. I got married in 2000 to my husband now and we have 2 children. My son has always been with me and I have custody, his dad has visitation every other week. His dad wasn't very involved for a long time but has tried to be since he got remarried a couple years ago. His new wife has 3 children that live ith him. "D" will be 11 in March and my other 2 children are 5(girl) & 3(boy). We will be relocating to Charleston, SC in about 6 months due to my husband being transferred with his job. I have discussed this with my ex and our son. I want to let our child choose, either way I'm fine with it. I do not think we should pressure him about who he should live with. He is a very smart kid and I trust his judgement. I have raised him to make his own decisions and feel this is one he should be able to make.
His dad is giving him a hard time about it and has threatened to take me back to court. He pays what he wants for child support and some times doesn't pay. I have always went out of my way to keep their relationship strong and want him to have a relationship with his dad. My ex says I can't take him out of state, is he right? Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
