How can he get full custody?

I have a friend who has a 6 mo old son with his 19 yoa g/f. They don't get along anymore and in fact the dr. has told them that all of the fighting is stressing out the baby and he can't gain weight. My friend is concerned as to the mother's parenting abilities and wants to end things but is afraid she will take the baby and leave the state. He would like to get custody and make arrangements for her to have visitation. What steps does he need to take?

Well if they have never married it is going to be a little harder for him. If there is know custody order though the courts then he can file for custody just as his ex girl friend can. At that time the court will decide wheather to give both parents joint custody with either the father or the mother having physical custody. n the custody order you can have it stimpulated that neither party can move the child out of state. Visitations will also be stimpulated as well as child support if there is know child support already ordered. Hope this helps good luck
