What legal rights does a father have for visitation

My daughter has lived with a relative for 3 years. I want custody of her but they are fighting me for her. She is 8 years old. We are going for mediation to try to resolve visitation first. How much time is allowed by law. I am requesting every other week-end Friday to Saturday. My mother had custody of her prior to this but became ill so they made my daughter a ward of the court. I am now capable of caring for her. Drug free, tested clean, good job etc. Their lawyer is requesting no visitation for myself or my mother. I have been involved in her life all the time she has been living with the relative. They simply just want her. After visitation I want to reunify to wean her into my home. What does the law allow?

As a father, they cannot simply cut you off if you have been involved in her life, despite past issues if you have cleaned up and have a solid job. Courts want to see both parents in a child's life. The lawyer is posturing, probably trying to get you to drop your quest to either gain custody or increase your visitation rights. You should stick to your guns and show the court that you are now stable, can provide for your daughter and the courts will not grant their motion for no visitation. Over time, you may be able get full custody. Good luck.
