It depends on the state, between 12-14 so no matter what state you are in your child is old enough to tell the judge where he wants to live.
A lot of kids start to want to spend more time with their dads when they get older
In Iowa, there's no law saying what age a child can choose - it's up to a judge.
If you and your ex decide it's ok for the child to move in with him, you don't need to go to court. If you don't want the child to move in with dad, then he'll need to take you to court.
