What are the steps involved in a child custody case?

My sisters boyfriend brought her to court for child custody of their son who has been living with my sister for the last six months. He hasn't even been paying child support.
She got out of the relationship because he was abusive. They had a court date and had a behind closed doors meeting.
I'm confused to what happenend and why.
She ended up with a four month trial of the father having the son once a week and every other weekend.
They also both have to have psychological evaluations and in home visits from the county. My sister is a good mother. She is not on drugs, or drink, or smoke. She has a job etc. Her ex is just controlling and by now just a huge lier.
I would like some help explaining why this is happening. My mother is distraught and feels that it is because of my sister county attorney.
Why a four month trial period? Why the evaluations? What happens next?
Thank you in advance.
Stacy

Maybe there is more going on then what your sister is telling you. If they went behind closed doors that usally means there is alot of things to be sorted out for different reasons. The court would only make a ruling like this for a good reason and for the best interest of the child. If the court is only allowing the father a visit once a week and every other week in it sounds like the court wants to limit his visits until the evaluation is complete before making a final ruling. I would guess by what your saying this is all about the abuse your sister was having with the father. This is a good thing and I do not feel that your mom should be over concerned at this point. If he said and she said this and that then in order to find out the truth they both would need to go though this. That does not mean that your daughter is going to lose her children,it most likley means the court wants to be sure that the kids will be safe with the father. your sister did not tell your mother what was said behind the closed doors. i would be concerned as to why not. anyways i would not worry everything will work out keep your faith.

Thank you. Your answer was very helpful and made me feel a little better. I just think my sisters county attourney wanted an in and out session that day. He was not very engaging as to what was going on.
