Why might an object appear one color in white light and another color in red light?

Objects, not internally illuminated, are seen by way of reflected light. Something that is, say blue, will absorb other colors in white light, and reflect blue. If you shine red light on this object it will be absorbed, so that the object will appear dark or black.
