Here in ky , layer and layers of trees, leaves ,sediment and animals died to form coal in a layer of water, and after an upheavel in the earths, crust, it was coverd and under huge pressure for millons of years, which formed coal as we know it today, oil the same way , it didnt have as much pressure as coal , and stayed liquid
