College degree

Are you working in the field you went to college for? Was the money spent at college (by you or your parents) worth it?

I first majored in Culinary Arts, then ended up majoring in Geophysics (don't ask how that happened) and ended up a housewife. My hubby that doesn't even have a HS diploma is working in the oil field (where I planned to go with my geophysics)... Making enough $$ for me to stay home w/ the kids...

For me personally college was pointless, except for the fact that when my hubby bitches about work I know what he's talking about... And I know a lot of useless crap now...

What about you?

I learned alot, mainly how to think scientifically

Majored in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry and Chemistry.

and with it, I built http://www.webanswers.com

I think it was worth it, and the experience of it was worth it. i put myself through college too, so i only have like a few K in student loans from that first year.

I have a friend, and she is going to Law school because she wants to prove to her self she can do it. not that she has an ambition to actually practice law, but just for the, i knew i could do it moment. she wants to be a house wife someday. She is in her second year and having problems with motivation because she isn't at the top of her game right now.

regardless, I think every on should go to college.

My background is art related. I started off as fine arts major and minoring in illustration and graphic design, switch it up a bit because I really loved illustration and graphic design but my scholarship was for fine arts and before I knew it I wasn't able to afford to go to school there anymore. Took some time off of school and was an assistance art director for an armory and sword shop. Made enough money to afford college again and stepped into an entertainment media college majoring in digital media.

Since then I have been an interactive designer and have played roles in helping to create interactive cd roms, video games, web sites, and other mutlmedia applications. I currently work in web development for a company that handles the worlds top resort and hotel companies promotions and websites.

I guess for me it was all about my passion for the arts, regardless of what form. My passions for fine arts and illustation still exist and I try to make time for them while making a living in web development.

My full-time job isn't what I went to school for. I graduated with a degree in psychology with a specialty in women's issues and I am a web designer/developer. So in that sense no, but I do volunteer as a victims advocate, so I would still say that I use my degree.

Fact is, college is not really about what you study as statistics show that our generation will change careers (not jobs, CAREERS) 7 times in our lifetime.

College is about more than that. College teaches you to open your mind, how to find information, teach yourself what you want to learn and how to conduct yourself as a professional. For me it seems it's more about the act of going, staying committed, dealing with conflicts with bad professors in an atmosphere that fosters personal growth.

I loved college, maybe that is why I am biased. It just seems interesting to me how someone who has gone to college, maybe not even finished handles situations differently and is willing to be more open-minded and will be more willing to agree to disagree.

I did work my way through college as well which I think gives you a different perspective as well rather than some of my peers that were able to take a four hour nap between classes and stay out all night every night. Either way, for me it was worth it, but everyone has different experiences.
