In our traditional educational system you have graduate degrees which are a bachelor of science or bachelor of arts; and you then have postgraduate degrees that are masters degrees or Ph.D.'s. When people have achieved one of these three particular degrees and want to further their education, they normally study to earn another one or more of the basic degrees above. Many schools offer "Certificates" and other forms of paper credentials but those can not be compared to the basic degrees. Technically, there is no officially recognized academic degree that is higher than a Ph.D.
