How can I help my child improve his handwriting and fine motor skills?

My child pushes hard when writing and struggles to have legible handwriting. He gets frustrated easily and then his writing gets sloppy. How can I help him learn to improve his handwriting?

You have not said how old your child is but I assume he is in grades 3-5 or above. First, boys often have a harder time with writing since their fine motor skills are not as good as girls. Many boys find it better to print. Also, as an educational administrator, I usually allowed, in fact encouraged, our boys to use the word processor. It does the printing for them and they will usually stay on the computer longer. To improve fine motor skills, your son needs to participate in fine motor skill activities such as knitting, sewing, cutting with scissors, coloring inside the lines (now you know why some of these activities are such a large part of a kindergarten curriculum).
