Registry updates

I keep getting a popup window that says I have critical system errors and that I need to update my registry if I am to avoid serious failures or crashes. I am pointed toward a website (www.regfixit.com) for the update but need to register and pay for the service. Is this an authentic threat to my computer? Should I update my registry? If so, is it possible to do so without paying for the service? Also, I continually get "script errors" and am asked to debug. How can these be fixed? What is the procedure? I would appreciate any insights you can provide.

Thanks,
James
