Things they should teach in high school...

So many times I read things on here that I am just LUCKY I learned at some point that I think they should teach you in high school or better yet middle school - that society just assumes you'll learn.

How to balance a bank account, manage debt and credit cards, what co-signing really means, what a credit score is, how important it is and how to protect it, basic civil laws, basic tax laws, interpersonal communication skills, family planning and birth control....

please add your own - practical things high school should teach, but doesn't!

There are so many things that they COULD teach in school to help people in the modern world.

the most important class I took in high school was typing.

the class i hated the most in high school was typing.

They really do need more modern money management, credit use, what do you want to be in life, type classes. However I doubt it will happen since that is the job of the parents to teach kids that stuff.

I think one thing they should teach kids - especially those serving well off areas - is what other people are going through. For instance, I spent some time over the holidays packing food boxes with my sons who are in Boy Scouts at the Salvation Army food bank. Kind of depressing when you are looking at what someone is getting for a holiday meal and you hope you can find a box of cake mix so kids can have something special. In some boxes, only frosting with no cake went into them. It really makes you realize the impact of those food barrels at Safeway.

Also, I'd add a whole lot more on understanding foreign cultures.

Great question Jodi! I agree with all of those suggestions that you've posted. Perhaps the high schools could do a little bit more with sharing the business world and the possibilities of career choices. I know that some schools are beginning to identify with some of this but sure wish they did when I was in high school.

Sidelko.....You're right on with the typing class. I absolutely hated it but now I am SO THANKFUL that I had it, especially in this computer age where it's a necessity to be able to use a key board!

I think a healthy relationships class fostering loving, caring and nurturing relationships would be good as well to help young adolescents identify confidently with who they are, what they deserve in a relationship and what they should give in a relationship. Unfortunately, too many kids grow up in such dysfunctional families that the really don't know what a relationship is truly supposed to be.

A class to prepare you for the real world would be nice.

Money Management.
1. how to balance a checkbook and finacial planning.
2. Credit. How your credit score affects you, how to keep a good credit score, how to build credit.
3. savings, interest rates, how student loans work, stocks etc.

Career
1. Networking
2. Resumes and cover letters (I know they do this, but they should be more indepth)
3. Interviewing process and other resources
4. orginization and time management
5. Business software such as microsoft office (word, powerpoint, excel, outlook etc).
