When Hefner first started publishing Playboy and developed the Playboy Philosophy (among other things), there was seriousness to his work, controversial though it was. A few decades later, when he handed over control of the publication to his daughter, he had not yet entered the dirty old man phase of his public persona but could have matured into a philanthropist or a wizened elder. Whether his current predilections invalidate his legacy is open to debate, but at some point, he became an even more ridiculous caricature of himself. American culture could probably have used someone with a truly adult view of sexuality, free speech, and this other projects. Instead, he appears to have sunk back to adolescent motivations, which at his now advanced age makes him merely a dirty old man. His wealth justifies nothing.
