I think that fans just love their celebrities so much they think they can somehow develop relationships with them. Often the image a celebrity portrays in public can be quite different than they really are. If a celeb want to stay out of the public eye they will. Many celebrities live very private lives, and they manage to stay out of trouble. Usually it's the ones that want the attention that are plastered all over the tabloids on a weekly basis.
