Yes. I think it is essential to life because it creates positive energy and it feeds the soul. Music is very uplifting, it gets you moving, it enhances your life force, it makes you want to sing and dance, and makes you happy, overall. Think about the energy in the room at a rock concert - it is awesome!

It is essential to life, or at least human life, as it is one of our main and oldest forms of expression. We have used music to tell stories, dance, or portray emotion since the old days. It is something that is a part of humans, unexplainably, but a part none the less.

As far as personality is concerned, I don't think that music determines your personality, more that your personality determines what style of music you will be drawn to.

In our life we need to be social. I believe that music is creating by human beings, for human beings. Therefore it is essential for us to listen to music because it connects us with our social needs.

This question hinges on how one interprets the word "essential." In its literal meaning that a person simply cannot live without it (such as with air, water, food, and shelter) or else die, music is obviously not essential. But considering how easy it is to make and share music with the voice and simple percussion, there is no conceivable situation where total deprivation would be under consideration. Even deaf people experience music on a tactile level, though not through hearing.

If the word "essential" is interpreted more rhetorically, then yes, I'd say it's essential, just as human society is essential to human wellbeing. (People in isolation tend to go batty.) Again, it's nearly impossible to contemplate someone being unaware of or isolated from music, so the question goes to how much attention and devotion one gives it. It should be obvious that as very young children, almost all of us learn music and language alongside each other. However, music is not connotative like language, so its meaning is intrinsic and expressive in the abstract, rather than the extrinsic and more fixed meaning behind language.

I think it is an important part of life. Music really affects our moods and we all have a certain type of "music inside" that's important to express. In addition, music helps us get up and move around. Whether that movement is expressed as dancing or exercising, it can really help us with that movement and we need the movement to help keep us healthy.

Though my main goal was to gather different opinions - which means every answer was ultimately valid - this seemed to me to be the more balanced view on the subject and the one that better addresses the problematic of different conceptualizations of what's essential and how music fits into those different formulations.

Thank you Brvtvs and everyone for your answers.
