Why does mainstream music seem to digress?

Is it just me or does mainstream music seem to digress as far as lyrics as well as instrumentals?

If you are talking about mainstream hip hop you got a great point. This is why I avoid mainstream music for this very point, but yes I do cave in once in a while if the song is catchy. Music on the mainstream level are just made to please the ears or the mind, however you look at it and this is only to bring in more money. I do listed to mainstream artist though, but it is usually the songs that don't make it to the radio because I feel the lyrics are much better quality than that of the radio.

The lyrics of mainstream music to me seem to be about the same thing, partying every day. This is what the basic consumer or listener wants because it just sounds good. If you look at any album, they will have a whole bunch of music that would not normally be played on the radio because of its content, and then you have a couple songs that just blow up the radio. Every other song played will be this song it seems like, and they only do this so that they keep the loyalty of their fan base.

As far as the instrumentals, I usually don't have a problem with them unless they have an irritating beat. For instance, a song that I disliked because of its beat was Blame It (On the Alcohol) by Jamie Foxx. This beat just was something that I could not imagine why people would like this song, but i guess since its about partying everyone seemed to like it.

I just noticed this trend as you have, and I'm sure that other people have noticed it too, and avoid it for the same or different reasons that I do. Thanks for your question, I'm very pleased someone else has noticed the same things that I have been noticing about music these days.

I've been arguing for years that mainstream music (mostly rock and pop) reached an early maturity in the early 1970s and then blew itself out: fast flame burns bright but briefly. It's not that some good music hasn't been made since then, it's that the depth of music that grew organically out of thoughtful music-making and lyrical sensibilities has yielded the field of play to technical prowess and slick polish. Many singers can't even sing without digital assistance, which means no live performance, and many players resort to programming machines to play sounds rather than actually sitting at a drum set or strapping on a guitar. In addition, commercial interests have created a steady stream of little monsters like Britney Spears, who has little or no vocal appeal but can certainly tart it up suggestively. (She's already past her best years, though she's not nearly so ridiculous on stage prancing about like Mick Jagger at 68).

While not completely collapsed, the conditions necessary for fruitful creation in mainstream music have disappeared just like they did in classical music in the 1940s and 50s. One could argue the exceptions, of course, but the lack of breadth compared to bygone decades tells a very different story. That's why the concert and opera stages are museums, mostly programming music already 100 to 300 years old that people still want to hear. That's also why so many radio stations play classic rock from 30 to 45 years ago, which for now at least stands the test of time, unlike whatever was new last year.

Two great answers, tough call but I think Brvtvs broke down some good reasons as to why it seems to be digressing.
