Ouch. sorry to hear about your daughter Ruchele. The most dangerous parts about mosh pits are cases where someone inadvertently gets caught up in them. If you know they are there, you can brace and protect yourself from them.
In Ruchele's daughters case, I'd almost bet that pit just formed around here, or moved to include her. She didn't realize what was happening at first, got thrown in the middle, knocked down and trampled.
It is hard to cut down on that sort of things at shows. However at least here in Denver there are strick no crowd surfing policies. That will eject anyone on their first crowd surfing attempt. Some people, like heavy overweight guys should not have been allowed every do that. Light girls were ok, except that guys tended to feel them as they went by.
In some scenes and shows, mosh pits will never go away. regardless how dangerous they are.

This is not a complete list because data is hard to get and there's no national clearinghouse for information. But last year in a sampling of the most dangerous events, it was surveyed that at 31 concerts in 11 countries there was 55 deaths, more than 11,400 injuries, 418 arrests and more than $33,000 in property damage in mosh pits alone.

The only injury I have had from being in or around mosh pits in all the shows I have been too was some prick who punched me for no reason in the head twice before the opening band came on because I was trying to get up front.
8 stitches, an mri and 3 days with a concussion later, I could drive my car again.
With the pumpkins, they don't need to worry about mosh pits anymore, they no longer play the type of music that would incite a mosh pit. They are well on their way (along with bands like Dave Matthews) to becoming jam bands.

Yeah, I LOVE concerts, but I don't like the mosh pits. Not sure if they can outlaw them but if you've ever been in mosh pit, voluntarily or not you can tell people that don't want anything to do with it get hurt. It's a toos up for me because I get it, but it's dangerous. I just wish they could somehow limit it to the people who want to be involved.

No they don't need to be outlawed. I was a teenage concert going who loved the moshpit and crowd surfing. Back then there were rules and everyone took care of each other. Someone falls you pick them up immediately. The guys always knew if a girl was in the moshpit you took it easy. and sometimes they'd open it up for girls only. You helped steer crowd surfers away from mosh pits so they don't fall and you help protect those that accidentally find themselves where they don't want to be.
Accidents happen and there is risk involved but that is what makes it so fun!
Avoiding a moshpit can be simple.
1. If there are floor and seat tickets opt for seat but for Gen Admin just do the following.
2. Stay out of the Middle Middle. This is where moshpits typically occur.
3. Get there early and get in line. Get a spot right up front. and hold on to the gate right before the stage. There are bounchers between the stage and the gate to make sure no one makes it on stage. Also there are usually bouncer right up close in the crowd to make sure crowd surfers don't get hoisted over. I've never seen that happen and right up front has always been fine.
4. Stay to the sides, or to the very back because in the middle unless you are really tall you can't really see much of the band aways. enjoying from further back is just as enjoyable.
5. Moshpits never start by a wall, find a wall and use it.
6. Stand close to the bar. People around that area are not looking to spill their 5 dollar concert drinks.
