What is a posthumous Oscar nomination?

I've been reading a bunch of tabloids talking about how Heath Ledger could get a posthumous Oscar nomination for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

What is a posthumous Oscar nomination exactly and how is it different from a normal Oscar nomination?

This is a nomination after someone has died. Post = after, humous = death. Susu
