The I-Bond rate in 2008 was as low as 0%, and the current I-Bond rate is 0.30%. So your $2,000 I-Bond from 2008 is probably worth around $2,000 x .30% = $2,006, give or take a few dollars (or pennies).
With inflation at approximately zero or less, I-Bonds are not a good investment because they will pay hardly anything. You'd probably get a better rate from a savings account at your local bank.
