Good question, there are definitely differences between the Tax Lien and the Tax deed. The main differences would be that with the Tax Lien you can collect the interest from the past due taxes, this happens after you would purchase the Tax Lien.

With the Tax deed however, you will have the ability to acquire the residence if the taxes are not paid, rather than just collecting the interest. Very good question.
