There are electric, gas/propane flame, charcoal/fire flame, microwaves - those are the most common - however any heat source can be used to cook; my husband has cooked on the engine of his oil rig before....

I like my electric roaster. It is like a big oven, but better. Go to this site for cooking a turkey.
