Yes it is possible to drink too much water, although it is extremely unlikely. Your body has to maintain a certain concentration of salts like sodium and potassium in order for cells to work correctly. Excessive intake of water can disrupt the concentrations of salts in your body. The latin medical term for this is "hyponatremia," which means lack of sodium.

If you drink too much water in too short a period of time you can dilute the salts in your body below the level where cellular functions can occur. Without salt, your cells can't transport nutrients through the cell walls and they begin to die. Salts also play a role in nervous system function.

The most likely victims of this condition are endurance athletes, hazing victims, and contest participants. It is unlikely that a person would ever drink too much water without some outside influence such as extreme athletic activity or forced consumption.

In one word, yes. Drinking too much water causes water intoxication which results in hyponstremia, dilution of sodium in the body. You're actually drowning from the inside out. The rate of ingestion if fast enough can cause the kidneys to shut down or fill the stomach so much that it presses against organs and shut them down.

Just to clarify some information from other responses, drowning refers to water in the lungs preventing one from breathing. This is not at all what happens in hyponatremia, and using the term drowning when referring to drinking too much water can only cause confusion.
