Should you type "LOL" if you aren't really laughing out loud?

If you don't find something funny enough to truly laugh out loud, is it OK to then type "LOL" to someone who told you something online that was supposed to be funny?
I do it all the time without even thinking. LOL. I'm not super-serious here. I'm not about to ever type LOI or LOTI for "laughing on the inside." LOL it is. I'm interested in what you have to say. I love silly questions, what can I say.

Yeah I think everyone does it, I do it too. I guess it works if you think what they say is funny, but not so funny that you can't stop yourself from laughing in real life.

I love using it, and I think it can actually be a good tool to prevent misunderstandings. If you say something that could be taken in a negative way but was meant as a joke and put LOL at then end, well then that makes it all okay now doesn't it. I think it has become the thing to use when you have nothing else to say. It can get annoying when overused but I think it's great.

I only use it when it is literally true, though a lot of people seem to use it more often. I find it irritating when someone writes lol after everything they say - it reminds me of that sort of self-conscious laugh some people have whenever thay say anything, funny or not! Or of laughing at your own jokes before anyone else gets a chance...

As it is extremely difficult to express sarcasm through text or email or Facebook messages, LOL is and will continue to be used as a method of breaking that barrier. When it is known that the content is intended to be funny, it makes the readers perception tune into the sarcasm being expressed.

Honestly, I rarely Laugh Out Loud while sitting at my computer. I have always wanted a Giggling Quietly To Myself abbreviation GQTM; I would use it more often. :-)

I use LOL alot of times even if I dont really laugh. It more to show emotion. You cant get a feel for what some means by typing because you cant see there body language so when I say something that is supposed to be funny, or taken not seriously I will add lol at the end.
