How can I take advantage of any tax deduction for my son's travel, food, lodging, chess education, and tournaments?

My 12 year old son is a national chess champ. I pay $125 dollars a week on lessons. Last year I spent over $3,500 dollars on food, travel and hotels for him to participate in those tournaments. There must some tax benefit for me to help him to continue to play chess. I am a widower with two children if that helps.

I don't know what state you are from so I don't know if that state has a credit or something. As far as your federal return goes, there is nothing for hobbies. If he is in chess as a way to help you have someone to watch him (like child care), you may be able to deduct part of it as child care but you would need to talk to your accountant to see if you would quality for it and to see if that applies to you. Sorry.
