Does medical marijuana patients have right at vocational schools?

I got to a vocational school in california and medical marijuana is legal. I am now a lupus patient and the doctor asked if i preferred natural meds and I do. I am thinking about becoming a medical marijuana patient but I am afraid that my school might think otherwise and kick me out for my use. I am in severe muscle pain and prescription drugs don't work. Does my school have the right to kick me out even if I'm not medicating on campus?

This is an excellent question, and one that has great challenges...California is one of the states that have indeed legalized the use of medical marijuana....However, there is still much controversy about this...Having said this, I would discuss this with your physician....In my professional opinion, I can only say that if one is prescribed "Medical Marijuana" by a physician, it would be NO worse than taking an opiate for pain....I would think that the school would have to recognize this as a Medical Necessity and could not discriminate the use of it...You do make a point in adding that this would not be something that you would use while on campus.....So, very interesting question, but one best discussed by your prescribing physician as he is probably more informed on the legalities of this than I would be...You would either be going to school under the influence of Cannibus, or if you were to take the alternative, you would be under the influence of an opiate...To me, it's a coin toss...Please, keep us posted on this most interesting subject...Good Luck and God Bless. I applaud you for your desire to get an education to spite your illness.

It might depend on the vocation your going to school for. If there's a chance you could put others at risk, the school might be against it.

Maybe your doctor could make a call to the school on your behalf.

I am currently talking with my rheumatologist about this topic because I am so sensitive to prescription drugs. Thank you for the info, it really helped. I am trying to get the medical marijuana prescription so i can only use cannabis when I have flare ups. I wouldn't even be using it as a daily thing. Just for my flare ups. Thank you for the applaud, I feel an education is important, I'm going to school for medical assisting. I feel everyone should try to continue their education and even though my doctor suggested that I should try to sign up for SSI I told him he would at the very least have to have proven the need for a removal of an essential organ for me to even think about that. I hate the idea of people taking government money when they don't really need it, especially when you live in LA, where the rate of homeless people is increasing every day and that money could go to making more shelters or helping sick lower class people get medical attention. We as a state as a county need that kind of money in our economic crisis. Anyway, Thank you for the advice, I needed it, I am in so much pain that I can't even dress myself today. I'll keep you posted.

We need more people like you...I am sure the medical profession will be delighted to have someone with your passion....I wish you nothing but luck....I have a feeling that you can over come anything with your attitude....If cannibus was legal here, I would prescribe it to some of the patients that I take care of with similiar illnesses.....Again, Good Luck to you and God Bless....
