My mother has the exact same thing. I believe my sister might have mildly caught it, after she went on a 7-week trip though she has no more symptoms. My dad sleeps with her every night (obviously) and he has not caught a thing. I feel sick sometimes and my throught hurts as well, but no other symptoms are present. My mom has had this going on for about a couple months and she is also in her mid 50's and has never had this happen to her before.

Being a nurse, she was very touchy to any suggestions because "she knew better" (mind you she's been in the field for quite some time and could get promoted in a heartbeat, but being with her family is top priority and makes her happy) and finally my dad and I talked her into going to get it checked out because she has had breast cancer in the past and my father said he couldn't imagine raising us without her and she's his life and soul. Without her we'd be lost too (their children) and so that also contributed to persuading her. In the end she swallowed her pride and went to see what it is since she couldn't figure it out either.

They prescribed her some medicine that made her feel drowsy and irritable and also stuffed up, and she is recovering but still has slight the symptoms and the effects of the medicine. We go on walks a lot so that must help it, but she has arthritis in her knees so walks are not entirely elongated with her. But she is trying her hardest and making a recovery from whatever bug she has come down with.

They didn't know exactly what it was she had and it sounds an awful lot like what you have, so here are my suggestions to you:

Get it checked out, whether you want to or not, it can only help.

If prescribed medication, take the recommended amount on a regular basis. This will help with the recovery process.

Stay active as best you can and try and get outdoors more often for some fresh air and let nature help you out. Again, it can only help, plus it relieves stress.

Hopefully this answers your question and I do hope you recover from these coughing fits your having :)
