It is a chemical half life thing. Azithromycin is designed to provide what is called a "loading dose" that is the first 2 pills you take, then you take one pill for 4 more days, building on this dose, the idea is that it leaves the system by "halfs" every so many hours, depending on the drug, in this case, every 48 hours, it means that it will take 10 to 14 days for the drug to be fully eliminated by the body.
