Can a stab victim survive a pierced lung and an immobile arm?

My friend was stabbed in the back and suffers from a pierced lung and lack of mobility in her left arm. The doctor told her that they would have to remove her left arm and she might have five years to live and if she doesn't have it removed then she'll only have up to two years. People have suffered pierced lungs from stab wounds and it wasn't life threatening why is her case different? and is there any way she will survive without the removal of her arm?
