There is no known historical verification as to when and where the varicella virus originated. Because although there are records dating back of illnesses involving blisters on people's bodies in various parts of the world prior to the sixteenth century and earlier there is no authentic consideration of differentiation between the varicella virus which causes chickenpox and the herpes zoster virus which causes shingles, nor is there any clear cut differentiation between these viruses and the variola virus which caused smallpox.
So realistically no date prior to 1831 can be verified as that was when Richard Bright first hypothesised the chickenpox and shingles viruses arose from, the dorsal root of ganglion, as later confirmed by Felix Von Barunsprong.
