Does an employee need to have a doctors note for one or two days of sick leave?

I am used to employers requiring a doctors note if out 3 days or more due to illness. Can an employer require a doctors note for 1 or 2 days out. I recognize there are some employees who have patterns of behavior that are inappropriate, such as missing every Monday. But in general, does an employee have to have a doctors note for having the "runs" or some other health condition that lasts 1 or 2 days and does not require going to a doctor?

1-2 days is normal for someone who is unfortunate to have caught a stomach virus. Most employers don't ask for doctor's notes for this amount of time out, only extended amounts of time. IMO, an employer that would require a note for 1-2 days is unreasonable, especially if the employee does not have a pattern of a poor attendance history.
