Yes the H1N1 swine flu can cause unusual damage to the lungs, Although H1N1 swine flu has not been around for that long, doctors have already uncovered the effects of the H1N1 virus on the lungs. In one study a man was shown to have ground-glass opacities in his lungs, while others displayed evidence of blood clots blocking off oxygen supply to the lungs. Lung damage caused by H1N1 is more evident in those with underlying health complaints.
If these clots and other lung damage can be seen soon enough with the use of CT scans of the chest then patients can get the appropriate treatment, in the form of anticoagulants to break down the clots which are blocking oxygen supply to the lungs.
