Freckles, age spots, and other darkened skin patches may darken or more pronounced when exposed to sun because melanin absorbs the energy of the sun's harmful UV rays in order to protect skin from overexposure. The usual result of sun exposure is skin tanning, which tends to darken areas that are already hyperpigmented so wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen (one that blocks UVA and UVB rays) is a must. You can get prescription creams to lighten the skin they usually have hydroquinone as an active ingredient. Bleaches will lighten and fade darkened skin patches by slowing the production of melanin so dark spots slowly fade to match normal skin coloration. Prescription bleaches have double the amount of hydroquinone, the active ingredient, as over-the-counter skin bleaches. For more severe cases prescription creams with tretinoin and a cortisone cream may be prescribed. Lasers are effective in some cases but sometimes make it worse, talk to your dermatologist.
