It sounds to me like he's looking for a pneumothorax. It's when you have a hole in your lung which causes it to collapse (most the time partially) and air leaks into your chest cavity. You'll have to have a tube inserted into your chest cavity to remove the air, but it's not as horrible a procedure as it sounds. I've know 2 people to have them - both smokers who got bronchitis all the time. They can happen over and over and are really costly. Quitting smoking helps.

I had this after my car accident a few years ago. I hit a tree and the airbag crushed me against the seat and literally crushed my chest. My ribs broke, poking holes into my lungs. I was life flighted an hour away after getting a chest tube. I spent 6 days in the hospital in Critical condition. Horrible experience!

After they took the tube out I still had an inch of my lung that actually sealed itself together so part of my lung never reopened. AND my ribs stick out more on that side.
I don't have any lung or breathing problems these days though. Once it healed it was fine. I am in perfect health now!
Thank God for that.
