Yes the pain can sometimes feel sever on the side of the foot but usually underneath. If the pain is sever on the top of the foot I would investigate other causes.

Yes the pain can sometimes feel sever on the side of the foot but usually underneath. If the pain is sever on the top of the foot I would investigate other causes.
The top is not likely, the side and bottom could most definitely be affected however. Each patient is different and may have different referral patterns of pain and you could most certainly be referring plantar fascitis pain to the top of your foot, but it sounds more like the superficial fibular (peroneal nerve) is affected. If your pain is reproducible by pushing on the top of the foot or on the outside front part of the leg, you may be experiencing some sort of peronial nerve neuralgia caused by muscle entrapment. I have attached a picture below of where this nerve is located.
