My son and I have a bad cough that wont let go!

My little family took turns getting sick. Seemed like the common flu. But for the last month or so my 5 yr old son and I have been coughing our lungs out! No congestion, just a tickle that sneaks up when you don't want it too. Nothing helps the cough we just have to cough harder and harder until we vomit. Then we are good for a few hours. Why? How do we get rid of this cough? What could have gave us this cough? Any ideas or input?
